Aims

Key Stage 3

Year 8

  • Instruments of the Orchestra - pupils will develop an understanding of the instruments in the orchestra recognising what they look like, the sound they produce and how they are played.

  • Building Bricks - pupils should understand and recognise the concepts of musical terms such as pitch, dynamics, duration, tempo, timbre and texture in their listening, composing and performing activities.

Year 9

  • Time Keeping – pupils will learn the meaning of beat, pulse & rhythm and should also develop an understanding of note values and time signatures.

  • World Music – pupils will develop a knowledge of the instruments and musical culture of China, Africa and Jamaica.

Year 10

  • Dance Music - pupils will gain a knowledge of musical genres and concepts relating to dance music from 1950s-present day through a variety of listening and composing activities.

  • Film Music - pupils should understand and recognise musical concepts related to film music such as incidental music and programme music. They should also learn about the various effects created through film music by participating in listening and composing activities.

Pupils will also have the opportunity to learn and develop practical skills using a variety of percussion instruments, African drums, Ukulele and DJ decks.

Performance Skills

  • Unit 1: Performance Realisation Skills – Performer
    This unit will enable the learner to demonstrate performance realisation skills. Pupils will learn and develop musical skills as a performer using DJing, singing, guitar or drumming.

  • Unit 2: Composition
    This unit will enable the learner to understand how to create original musical compositions. They will develop skills in music production by learning to use the music software GarageBand and will focus on instrumentation, melodic devices and arrangement and structuring techniques.

Each pupil is required to create a portfolio of evidence, which demonstrates achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit.

Each unit of the qualification is graded using a structure of Pass or Not Yet Achieved.
