Physical Education

Aims

  • To equip pupils with wide-ranging skills in a variety of sports and physical activities.

  • To provide opportunities for pupils to express themselves both individually and as part of a team.

  • To develop the confidence in pupils to ask questions and form their own opinions on sports-related topics.

Key Stage 3

Pupils will actively participate in a wide range of activities including Swimming, Gymnastics, Fitness, Basketball, Athletics, Football, Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, Racket Sports and Cross Country:

 In these lessons, pupils will:

 Make decisions about what they want to achieve and how to improve the quality of their work (e.g. analysing strengths and weaknesses and suggesting ways to improve).
Key element: Personal understanding.

 Develop positive relationships and respect for the differing capabilities of others through participation in a range of competitive and co-operative physical activities.

 Experience and evaluate the health and fitness benefits of a range of different physical activities  , including their physical, social and psychological well-being.

School sports teams play competitive fixtures in Rugby, Football and Hockey in Years 8-10.


Key Stage 4

OCR Level 2 Cambridge National Certificate in Sport Studies

The PE department deliver the Cambridge National Sport course in Years 11 and 12. This course builds on many aspects of the NI Curriculum that are developed in Key Stage 3 PE at BBMS.

 The Pupils will study:

  • Unit R051: Contemporary issues in sport (external exam)(25%).

  • Unit R052: Developing sports skills (internal assessment) (25%).

  • Unit R053: Sports leadership (internal assessment) (25%).

  • Unit R054: Sport and the media (internal assessment)  (25%).

Assessments include practical performance in’ team and individual sports, as well as coaching classmates in a sport of their choosing.

One written exam (RO51) on topics including Hosting major sporting events’, ‘Drug use in sport’,  ‘Barriers to participation in sport’ and ‘The Olympic Games’.

Coursework assignments relating to sport and the media and sports leadership skills.

BTEC First Award in Sport (Level 2)

This is 4 units over 2 years:

  • Fitness for Sport and Exercise (External Exam)

  • Practical Performance in Sport (Internal Assessment)

  • Applying the Principles of Personal Training (Internal Assessment)

  • Leading Sports Activities (Internal Assessment)

This course provides an engaging and relevant introduction to the world of sport. Independent study skills will be developed when learning about the exam topics and portfolio unit work will require planning of coaching sessions, practical skill performances and leadership skills demonstrations.

CCEA Level 2 Occupational Studies Environment and Society

 Unit 51 - Running a Leisure Event (50%):

  • AO1 – Health and safety, environment, and related careers, materials and related skills and knowledge (20%).

  • AO2 – Action Planning, Identifying skills required to run the event, demonstrating high standards in personal appearance and behaviour, communicate effectively with team members, contribute effectively to running of event, questionnaire and feedback ( 60%).

  • AO3 – Task evaluation, Final evaluation (20%).

Unit 52 - Sports Leadership (50%):

  • AO1 – Health and safety, environment, and related careers, materials and related skills and knowledge (20%).

  • AO2 – Objectives, session plan, run the sports session, effective .communication skills,  motivation, questionnaire and evaluation ( 60%)

  • AO3 – Task evaluation, final evaluation (20%).

 Assessment takes the form of a portfolio with evidence of knowledge and understanding of sports-related topics including leadership styles, health and safety, risk assessment and evaluation of own performance in practical tasks.


Post 16

OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity (Single Award)

Mandatory Units:

  • Unit 1 – Body systems and the effects of physical activity (External exam) (90 credits).

  • Unit 2 – Sports coaching and activity leadership (Internally assessed) (90 credits).

  • Unit 3 - Sports organisation and development (External exam) (60 credits).

    Optional Units:

  • Unit 8 – Organisation of sports events (Internally assessed) (60 credits).

  • Unit 18 – Practical skills in sports and physical activities (Internally assessed) (60 credits).

 Pupils will develop their sports leadership skills by taking part in and then being assessed on their ability to lead 3 coaching sessions with an outside club.

Pupils will learn about many current issues in the sports environment.

Pupils will develop presentation skills and teamwork skills when organising a sports event and carrying out their own roles and responsibilities.

Pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of the body systems and how they adapt to exercise. They will sit an external exam paper for this.

OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Double Award)

The units are the same as Single Award with these additional units:

  • Unit 4 - Working safely in Sport, Exercise, health and Leisure (External Exam)

  • Unit 5 - Performance Analysis in Sport and Exercise (Internal Assessment)

  • Unit 11 - Physical Activity for specific groups (Internal Assessment)

  • Unit 17 - Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation (Internal Assessment)

  • Unit 13 - Health and Fitness testing for Sport and Exercise (Internal Assessment)

Paul is a vetted Squarespace Expert and a Leader of the Squarespace Circle Community where he tries to inspire and engage a vibrant community of creatives. Paul studied Software Engineering as well as Electronic Engineering at University, and Photography at College, before working in a variety of exciting roles in the creative industry before he founded SF Digital, building trusted products to help Squarespace creatives increase sales, engage visitors and improve user experience for their clients.
