Ballyclare High School 4 V Belfast Boys' Model B 0

It was a difficult afternoon for the Year 8B Team on Friday. The visit to Ballyclare High School is one the team will learn a lot from. They found it difficult against a side that was always comfortable in possession but had pace and more than a few players that were creative in the last third of the pitch.

The first half was an experience in defending for the Model back five, as the midfield found it difficult to contain the number of attacks launched by Ballyclare. However, they remained steadfast in their approach, and but for their good communication and ability to win last ditch tackles (Notably from Jordan Ward) they would have ended the half looking at a more insurmountable scoreline than 2-0. Indeed, a few break away attacks launched by Jack Logan could have seen the deficit reduced only for the Ballyclare defence thwarting some direct runs on goal from Dylan McAloney.

The second half began with the Model keeping possession better and showing some bite in their attacks as they were keen to compete. McAloney was dangerous again up front while Danyl D'arco's move to right back was another positive from the half. However, Ballyclare settled the match with another two goals - one of note that Curtis Bell (Who had a great game in goals) had no chance of saving as it soared into the top right of the goal from just inside the penalty area.

A learning curve indeed for the B Team, with 16 players getting minutes on the pitch and a good debut from Harrison Freeland at centre half.

There will be better days to come for this squad. #webelieve #WATM

Year 9’s storm to victory

The Year 9A team took on Lagan College in the 3rd round of the Belfast Cup and literally blew the opposition away! In very stormy conditions the Model started the game by pinning the Lagan College side deep in their own half and it wasn’t long before they got their just reward with a superb team goal finished off by Zac Gibson.

The team continued to show great discipline and creativity moving the ball at a very high tempo and pressing the ball high in the opposition’s half leading Zac Gibson scoring a spectacular 2nd goal. Goal number three arrived with some great interchanging play down the right-hand side between Josh and Alex Greer which led to Alex cutting the ball across Lagan’s six-yard box which was being pursued by Gary Dickson who pressured the Lagan centre half into making a mistake and putting the ball into the back of his own net. The Model continued to press and forced the Lagan College goal keeper into some great saves before captain Reece Davidson finished off a fine display of some intricate play to give the Model a 4 - 0 lead. The half time whistle came a little earlier than expected as the Model continued to dominate, however, with the weather conditions worsening the referee along with the agreement of both coaches blew the whistle after just 18 minutes of play.

The second half started in a similar fashion to which the first half finished with Lagan College camped in their own 18-yard box, defending admirably at times to ensure the Model didn’t score a 5th! However, after 7 minutes of play in the second half and Lagan who hadn’t registered a single shot on goal and at this point were struggling to get the ball past the half way line, it was decided that the match be brought to a halt as the weather conditions again began to worsen. A well-deserved victory for the Model team who continue to go from strength to the strength with every passing week. The man of the match was an easy pick this week as our captain Reece Davidson lead by example and as normal was the driving force in ensuring the Model got the victory. #WATM

Year 12 - Carrick Academy 3 - 4 BBMS

Could they do it on a wet and windy day in Carrickfergus? Of course they could!

The Year 12 ‘B’ Team were in action against Carrick Academy in the East Antrim Cup. This was a tight match right from the beginning with very little between either of the teams. The conditions made it very difficult for a flowing game of football but it was BBMS who broke the deadlock. After a long ball into the box from a BBMS free kick, the Carrick Academy goalkeeper unfortunately mistimed his punch, with the ball finishing up in his own net.

Carrick Academy, not to be disheartened by this then took advantage of the conditions, using the wind at their backs to put pressure on the BBMS defence. They scored two well taken goals in quick succession, giving the BBMS keeper little chance of stopping them.

It was the turn for BBMS to have the advantage of the wind in the second half and they certainly made it count, with most of their success coming from a direct style of football. Dale Vokes equalised early in the second half, after showing great control and a superb finish. Ashton Larmour-McQuaide then put BBMS into the lead with an excellent finish with a header. Dale Vokes showed great composure and skill scoring once again and opening a comfortable lead for BBMS at 4-2, but it wasn’t to last long! Carrick Academy once again put BBMS under pressure, scoring a sublime free kick which went in off the crossbar.

The boys defended resolutely for the last 5 minutes to see the game out and to make it through to the next round. #WATM

Rugby

The Year 9 Rugby squad enjoyed a 'Play Rugby' session hosted by Carrick RFC on Monday. They developed their skills through a coaching clinic and then played games against Carrickfergus Academy and Ulidia Integrated College. Despite the cold and wet conditions, the boys played really well, drawing one match and being narrowly defeated in the other. The tackle of the day was definitely from Daniel who showed great technique and power to stop an opposing player with an almighty hit!

Well done boys for taking part in horrible conditions.

Hockey

A joint Year 8/9 hockey squad travelled to Laurelhill High School for the majority of the squad's first ever hockey game! In the wet and windy conditions the boys made a real go of it, playing a more experienced Laurelhill team. There were great performances from Preston Picking, Seth Irvine, Peter Valdez, Maddox Montgomery and Brody Colhoun. All played during each quarter and learned a lot from their experience, which they can take to their next match

Man of the Match for The Model must go to William Fraser in goals who made save after save. Unfortunately some goals got past him, and congratulations to Laurelhill on their win and thanks in helping us get started once again. Well done boys - it is great to get hockey matches started again at the Model.
