Irish Cup semi-final here we come!

BBMS 3 - 1 St. Columbs

The Year 12 team booked their place in the semi-finals of the Irish Cup with a 3-1 win over St Columb’s College, Londonderry. The Model started the first half with great energy and intensity and were making it very difficult for St Columb’s, giving them little time on the ball. The Model were awarded a penalty 15minutes into the first half after Adam Thompson was brought down in the box, who then successfully converted the penalty.

It was difficult for the boys to keep up this high intensity and St Columb’s began to grow into the game, but at the other end the Model were organised in their defence and allowed very little to trouble them.

The Model continued to apply pressure and push for the second goal, but they were finding it hard to break through due to some very strong and resolute defending by St Columb’s.

However, we would eventually double our lead on the brink of half time, after a free kick that was difficult for the St Columb’s keeper to gather, and some quick reactions from Owen McClelland challenging for the ball, the ball would end up at the feet of Marcus Thompson who would cooly find the back of the net from close range.

St Columb’s came out in the second half firing on all cylinders pushing to get a goal back. The Model were able to keep them at bay for a large portion of the second half, but the pressure from St Columb’s would eventually pay off, when a free kick deflected off a Model player, it fell kindly for a St Columb’s forward to find the back of the net after a crisp strike.

A lesser team could of folded, but the Model boys showed their character and defended doggedly after this. They were able to regain their composure and keep possession of the football.

The Model once again increased their lead after a sublime delivery from a free kick by Owen McClelland, Ben McFarland was able to pull away from his marker and find the back of the net with a well taken volley. The Model were then able to see out the rest of the game and book their place in the semi final.

A fantastic result and an excellent performance all round. Well done boys 👏🏼
